At Evarts Tremaine, we like to spotlight our team members to give an inside look at their everyday routines.
This month, we are highlighting Alison Covington. Alison is the Office Administrator and joined the agency in 2006.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I definitely have a routine. After I get to my desk in the back of the office, I turn on my laptop, wash my hands, and put my purse and jacket away. Most importantly, I change my glasses because of my elderly vision. (haha!) I then look for any urgent emails that need to be addressed. After that, I run a list of all of the policy changes that were completed the prior day and upload them into our computer system. I work with several commercial clients, so I also look to see if they have any specific change requests that need to be done or claims to report. The change requests can consist of anything from adding coverages, deleting vehicles or properties, or updating the value of an insured item.
Then, I start processing commission statements for all of our insurance companies so our producers can get paid at the end of the month. (They seem to like that part!) I also make sure that all of our agency’s out-of-state insurance licenses are maintained along with secretary of state and other regulatory filings. I do bookkeeping, run payroll, and coordinate our benefits enrollment. Finally, I make sure that the office is stocked with office supplies and coffee. In short, I like to make sure that everything is running smoothly throughout the office.
How did you get started in the insurance industry?
I answered an ad in the newspaper for an office manager back in the late 90’s and stumbled into the insurance world.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Being able to help someone understand a concept or just answer a quick question to ease their mind.
When you are not working, what are your favorite hobbies?
My husband and I love going to movies, going on walks or on car rides to just check out the local scenery. We are empty nesters now so we decided to get a puppy. We named her Abby. We love to watch her grow and experience new things!
What is one thing you would like people to know about the insurance industry?
It may be perceived as boring and dry, but there are always new concepts to learn as our society changes and some of the claim stories you just can’t make up.
