At Evarts Tremaine, we like to spotlight our team members to give an inside look at their everyday routines.

This month, we are highlighting Ann McDermott. Ann is a Commercial Insurance Account Manager in our Select Accounts Division.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day starts with arriving at the office around 8:30. First ,I check voicemail and return phone calls. Next, I address any certificates that need to be handled along with any claims that need to be addressed. Throughout the rest of the day, I handle miscellaneous items such as checking in renewal policies, policy change requests, and am starting to work on quotes for new and existing clients.

How did you get started in the insurance industry?

I started a part time internship at Evarts Tremaine in September of 2016 as an administrative assistant while finishing up my bachelor’s in Communications at Cleveland State University, right around the corner from the office! Upon graduation at the end of 2016 I started working full time. After learning more about insurance and how interesting it was, I decided to get my insurance license. Upon obtaining my insurance license I was placed in commercial lines. I never would have pictured myself in insurance- but now I truly believe there isn’t a better career path for me!

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

When customers call, they often have questions or a problem that they have run into. The most rewarding part of my job is helping them with whatever they may need and to hear the relief & satisfaction on their end. Personally, if I was not in insurance I would have a lot of questions about what certain terms mean or coverages are. So when I speak with the client and help guide them to understand and answer their questions, and hear the “green light in their brain go off” in their voice it is very rewarding as I know they are now at ease.

When you are not working, what are your favorite hobbies?

As a new homeowner I have been loving decorating! I also am very into cooking, working out, gardening, and spending time with my family and friends.

What is one thing you would like people to know about the insurance industry?

The insurance industry is forever changing. From when I started in 2016, to now it amazes me how many new coverages have evolved. Just when you think there couldn’t be any other coverages for a policy, a new one pops up. Another thing with insurance is that it is a lot of reading and you have to read forms to understand where coverages are. I am excited to continue to grow and learn in this industry.
